1. Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil [1] has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.
Our pastor has been teaching on the life of Jonah the past couple of weeks. I think it applies to everyone, and it will always hit home, no matter where you are in your life.
What happens in this small passage? Well, God told Jonah to do something. He wanted him to go to a certain place to open the eyes of the people to show them that they weren't living right. But Jonah was kinda scared of these people. He knew they were a tough crowd. So what did he do? He bought a ticket taking him as far away as he could get from Tarshish; he took himself "from the presence of the Lord." The scripture actually says that!
Now I know that is never our intention when we shy away from something, no matter how big or small, that God has asked us to do. But it puts a brand new perspective on it, right? We actually remove ourselves from God's presence. But by choosing to do the tough stuff instead, we actually have God with us! So no need to fear, right?! I don't know about you, but I need Him with me every step of the way.
